ArmA II offers players the ability to hop into a dreary and dangerous Eastern European province, as it creates one of the most hectic and difficult soldier simulations that is currently available today.

While there is no shortage of first-person shooters available to gaming fans that would like a fast-paced title, it is not often that a game comes along that defines itself strictly as a soldier simulation. A soldier simulation typically means one thing in the industry, and that is a slow game that is fueled more by paranoia and defensive playing than anything else. While there are some relatively large oversights in ArmA II, it does provide a number of advanced, and almost unseen, features that could make it a favorite for many.

Both the multiplayer setup and the campaign are set in the fictional Eastern European state of Chernarus. The United States is attempting to stabilize the region while countless factions attempt to create a chaotic and dangerous state run by a ruthless government. Players will work in four man squads that will have a wide variety of minor goals as well as overarching themes. At any point, a squad may be tasked with finding a transceiver in the hillside, and then will almost immediately be directed to take over a village alongside dozens of allies.

What this game truly has going for it is the scope and pace of the combat. Unlike other first-person shooters, which rely on scripted scenes where drama unfolds like it has already been pre-ordained, ArmA II throws players into a dreary world where combat is slow, methodical and nerve-wracking. This is exactly what differentiates ArmA from countless other titles, and it is the reason why the game is either loved or hated by almost every single player.

Within each match, the map is almost unimaginably huge, and the graphics are pristine for the scale of game outside of a few minor glitches when servers become overloaded. Players will be able to enjoy a variety of weapons from a modern arsenal, which can range from simple handguns and assault rifles to powerful rockets and cutting-edge jets. The sheer amount of weaponry only adds to the scale of the game, but the controls that are involved with managing a character can be cumbersome.

ArmA II was designed to help push past the bugs of the original two titles and create a dark world of combat that is not seen in any other game. While the scope will make it a favorite for many, the unwieldy feel of movement and the slow pace could push away some casual gamers.
